"What is Popular Culture?"

Popular culture is definitely a major part of my life. Today, while I was eating supper with my family, I watched part of American Idol. Later, I went to my room and went online, hitting sites such as youtube and myspace in my search for episodes of Bones, one of my favorite tv shows.

Popular culture wasn’t a prominent element in shaping my life. Admittedly, the hairstyle I wore to class on Monday was loosely based off the lead singer of a music video, I wear a few character/event t-shirts, and several of the clothing styles I wear are imitating what I saw people wearing while I was in Japan recently (and those styles were most likely based off popular culture). However, I would likely have never gone to Japan or watched that music video had my friends not introduced me to anime. Also, the majority of my clothing choices and hairstyles are not based off what I see on tv but what I find comfortable.

Many of my music choices are based off the shows I watch (however, many of those shows are not mainstream). Anime often have awesome openings and endings. I find songs I like and then look for more songs by the artist or similar songs. I have no real choice in my transportation because I drive my dad’s SUV and public transportation isn’t available and walking isn’t practical. On the whole, I think popular culture has shaped my generation quite a bit. However, some people are more effected than others.

Hi Rachel
I thought your blog was good. A lot of people have the same habits and do the same things that you describe.
